LEATHER RESEARCH LABORATORY

Dr. Nicholas J. Cory

After graduating with a Doctorate for researching the corrosion of superheater and reheater tubes used in nuclear reactors at the Atomic Energy Research Establishment (AERE Harwell), Nick decided to pursue something more challenging, and joined the leather industry!

He began as Environmental Manager at BLC for six years, taking responsibility for regulatory issues, effluent treatment technology, occupational safety and health, and advanced analytical techniques such as gas chromatography - mass spectroscopy (GC/MS). In response to the newly emerging concern with consumer safety, he spearheaded the development of new test methods for various substances in leather, including fungicides, aldehydes and the carcinogenic aromatic amines.

Nick has now been Director of the Leather Research Laboratory at the University of Cincinnati for nearly 12 years, directing the design and construction of the new research facility and catalyzing a 600% expansion in laboratory revenue. He has continued to develop his expertise in product safety concerns, while expanding his role into various other labeling issues for product manufacturers and retailers.
